The effectiveness of the project can be assessed by considering its various components and reflecting on my learning experience, particularly because only the Grade 7 learners were involved, and they were only able to produce three 2-litre plastic bottles after three weeks. The initial goal was to engage the entire Intermediate Phase (Grades 4 to 7) in a hands-on activity that would foster environmental awareness and promote sustainability. However, the focus was shifted to the Grade 7’s in particular, and as the project progressed, it became clear that focusing solely on the Grade 7 learners limited the potential impact of the initiative. While their participation provided a more manageable group to work with, the limited number of bottles collected indicated that I needed to explore more effective ways to motivate and inspire this age group. This experience taught me the importance of understanding students' motivations and the need for targeted communication strategies to encourage active participation in environmental initiatives. One key component of the project was fostering teamwork and unity among the Grade 7 students. Although the outcome was not as successful as hoped, the effort to create a class competition aimed to encourage collaboration and a sense of shared purpose. This aspect helped strengthen relationships among the students and foster school spirit, even in the face of low participation. It reinforced my understanding of how projects can build community and camaraderie, even when the measurable results may fall short. The initiative also highlighted the significance of family involvement in school projects. While I sought to engage parents, the limited outcomes indicated that more effort was needed to communicate the project's importance and encourage participation at home. This experience underscored the necessity of fostering stronger partnerships between the school and families, which could enhance future initiatives. In terms of community impact, while the project did not generate significant physical contributions in terms of plastic bottles, it did initiate conversations around waste management and sustainability within the school community. This dialogue is an essential first step in cultivating a culture of environmental responsibility. The limited success of the project has encouraged me to reflect on how I can better connect classroom lessons to real-world applications, emphasizing the importance of student agency and ownership in similar future projects. Overall, this experience has been a valuable learning opportunity. Despite the low number of bottles collected, it has helped me develop crucial skills in project management, communication, and leadership. The challenges faced have motivated me to think creatively about engaging students in meaningful ways. Moving forward, I will apply these lessons to design initiatives that foster greater participation and community involvement, ensuring that we work collectively toward our sustainability goals.

This service-learning project has changed me in many ways, both personally and professionally. I’ve become more aware of the environmental issues surrounding plastic waste and how small actions, like collecting 2-litre bottles, can contribute to a larger solution. I now think more critically about my own waste habits and how I can reduce my environmental footprint. The project also made me more empathetic toward underprivileged communities. Knowing that these bottles will be used to build homes for people in need has given me a deeper sense of social responsibility. I feel that I’m no longer just teaching learners about sustainability—I’m actively contributing to something meaningful. Leading this service-learning initiative also helped me develop my organizational and leadership skills. Coordinating multiple classes, encouraging learner participation, and dealing with challenges along the way have taught me how to manage a project from start to finish. I’ve learned to be more adaptable and resourceful, and I now feel more confident in my ability to lead others and inspire change. I’ve also gained a greater appreciation for experiential learning. Watching the learners actively engage in this hands-on project showed me that education goes beyond textbooks; it’s about real-world experiences that teach valuable life skills. Lastly, this service-learning project has deepened my connection to Agape Christian School and the surrounding community. Collaborating with other teachers, learners, and even parents made me realize how schools can serve as centres for community engagement. It is fulfilling to know that this project was not just about collecting bottles—it was about making a real impact on both the environment and people’s lives. This experience has given me a stronger sense of purpose, and I’m excited to carry these lessons forward into my future teaching and community work.

Service-learning has developed me professionally by providing practical experience in organizing and managing a project with real-world impact, even though the learners were only able to produce three 2-litre plastic bottles after three weeks. This outcome highlighted the challenges of engaging students in social and environmental responsibility, but it also offered valuable insights into creating meaningful educational experiences. Through this initiative, I gained a deeper understanding of how to effectively integrate these themes into the learning process, allowing me to create more engaging activities for my students. I learned how to coordinate efforts and inspire participation from both learners and colleagues, which sharpened my leadership and communication skills. Although the low participation rate was disappointing, it taught me valuable lessons about motivating learners through hands-on experiences and demonstrating the relevance of their actions to broader societal issues. This understanding has strengthened my ability to connect classroom lessons to real-life applications. In terms of new attitudes, I cultivated a stronger sense of empathy and social responsibility, recognizing the powerful role teachers can play in shaping not only learners’ academic knowledge but also their values and commitment to community service. I now view education as a tool for fostering both intellectual growth and social impact. This experience also instilled in me a greater appreciation for collaboration, as I worked closely with students, parents, and colleagues to bring the project to life, despite the challenges we faced.

This service-learning initiative offered significant benefits to the school, both in terms of fostering a positive school culture and promoting long-term sustainability. By involving the Grade 7 learners in collecting plastic bottles filled with unrecyclable waste, the project encouraged environmental awareness among learners and staff. It taught learners about the importance of recycling and waste management while also emphasizing the school's commitment to environmental sustainability. The initiative positioned the school as a leader in promoting eco-friendly practices and social responsibility, potentially inspiring similar projects in other schools or even the wider community. One of the key benefits to the school was the way it fostered a sense of unity and teamwork. By turning the project into a class competition, the learners were motivated to work together toward a common goal. This not only built camaraderie but also enhanced school spirit, as everyone worked collectively for a cause that benefited both the environment and society. Moreover, parents became more involved, strengthening the school-community relationship and encouraging wider support for future initiatives. In terms of sustainability, the project had the potential to be long-lasting and scalable. The collection of 2-litre plastic bottles filled with unrecyclable waste was an easily replicable activity that could be repeated annually or even expanded to include other recyclable materials. While the low number of bottles collected highlighted some challenges in engagement and participation, the process itself was simple, and the impact remained significant, especially with the donated bottles being used for sustainable housing projects. Over time, this initiative could have led to the school embedding recycling and sustainability into its broader curriculum, further ensuring that these principles became part of the school's long-term culture.

I believe that this service learning for all of us has created a space where we could create something of our own but also giving us the skills in order to organise and manage with other teachers and principles and I can see that you have done that throughout your service learning. It is really important to look after our climate and our world and your service learning has educated learners on how we can look after the planet better and find new ways to get rid of hard plastics and plastics that cannot be disposed of properly as well as educating learners on their ongoing issues of lack of housing in our country this is a really great initiative…
